PATIENT INVOLVEMENT
Patients need to be an active participant in their care. Effective bedside report allows patients to be a part of their own care, understand their diagnosis and treatment, and resolve concerns. Patients will be more involved in their care when bedside report is used (Sand-Jeklin et al., 2014) 3. Patient’s increased involvement in their own care will increase their compliance with therapies, treatment regimens, and their satisfaction with their care. Having the patient as an active participant on the health care team will improve patient outcomes (Sand-Jeklin et al., 2014) 3. Patients will be better aware and informed of their diagnosis and treatment process (Sand-Jeklin et al., 2014) 3. The better a patient participates in their care now, the better they will be able to care for themselves outside the hospital.
FAMILY INVOLVEMENT
A patient’s family plays a big role in patient safety, outcomes, and progress. When appropriate, as deemed by the patient, family members should participate in bedside report to help in the care of the patient. This is particularly important in an intensive care setting where patients may not be able to speak for themselves. “Patients’ families, however they are defined, are critical to patients’ health and well-being and are key partners in the decision-making process” (Hayakawa et al., 2015) 1. Family members can help to encourage patients to be active participants in the treatment process. Family members can also be a priceless support system for a struggling patient. Including patients’ family in bedside report will help nurses to give patient and family focused care (Hayakawa et al., 2015) 1. Family members may know things about the patient that the nurses do not, and they care enhance communication and the transfer of information during shift change (Hayakawa et al., 2015) 1. Family members are the ones who will be caring for the patient when they return home, therefore, the more involved they are now, the better they will be able to care for the patient at home. Bedside report is a powerful tool to use in order to include the family in the care team of the patients.
